"In prioritising national growth over local opportunity, governments are praying at the wrong altar and chasing the wrong rainbow." Not our words but those of the Former Chief Economist at the Bank of England Andy Haldane in the Financial Times The tide is turning against our outdated economic system. https://lnkd.in/edvGnYn9

Some of my favorite academics published a paper that exposes a controversial truth about our economic system: Infinite growth is not compatible with ecological sustainability. And rich countries are pushing the planet far beyond the limits of what it can sustain. In fact, not a single country(!) has achieved high living standards while staying within the ecological limits of the planet. Perhaps even more interesting is their research that shows that all this unsustainable growth isn’t actually improving people’s lives: After about $20,000 in per capita GDP, more growth barely improves key measures of wellbeing (like poverty, hunger, health, and education). So if growth doesn’t improve those things, then what DOES make life better? According to their survey of the research, things that actually improve wellbeing are: Full employment, strong social safety nets, free public services — and most importantly, good human relationships. The nice thing about these *actual* drivers of wellbeing is that they DON'T require endless growth. So the authors have come together to advocate for a “post-growth” economic system, which would take the goal of increasing GDP and replace it with the new goal of improving human wellbeing within planetary boundaries. And they are building out the research needed to make this transition possible. In a post-growth future, we wouldn’t have to choose between prosperity and sustainability — we could have both. But only if we reimagine and redesign our economy to focus on building community and public wealth, instead of the myopic focus on private financial wealth that harms the planet and primarily benefits the 1%. This also means reducing the growth dependencies that tie social welfare to increasing GDP in the current economy. The paper includes a lot more details, and lays out the research that’s still needed for this work — and it concludes with an important commentary on the politics of transition. (Long story short, we need a political transition plan.) For a link to the paper, and to a recent Substack post with my reflections upon reading it, check the comments below. Well said Gaya Herrington ! This is one of most skillful and penetrating speeches that I have yet heard on this vital, urgent need to create an economy that makes us thrive whether or not it grows, instead of an economy that grows whether or not it makes us thrive (Kate Raworth’s wonderful line), i.e., a wellbeing economy Wellbeing Economy Alliance - WEAll

2 weeks ago I used my keynote speech for the Sustainable Finance Summit to talk to bankers, CFOs, and investors about limits to growth. Did they boo me off the main stage? 💥 Unpaid care work powers the world! Yet, it gets NO credit. Every single day, 16.4 billion hours are spent on unpaid care — the equivalent of 2 billion people working 8-hour shifts... for FREE. If paid even minimum wage, this invisible work would be worth $11 TRILLION a year — 9% of global GDP. 👩🏽🍼 Care work is real work. It’s not in GDP. But without it, nothing else functions. 💬 These are the figures Valerie de Saint-Luc Bichelmeier - Make Mothers Matter - MMM head of United Nations Advocacy team - shared with Simon Ticehurst at her Wellbeing Economy Alliance - WEAll Talk. ✨ It’s time to stop taking mothers' care work for granted. 📢 Share with a mother whose care work deserves recognition. 🎥 Watch the talk: https://lnkd.in/e3P6P6nq 🔗 Or hit the link in bio #workingmum #UnpaidCareWork #MakeCareVisible #CareEconomy #FeministEconomics #MakeMothersMatter

“Care is the foundation for life itself. But in the market, it’s treated as a second-class citizen.” In his new book »The Care Economy« CUSP director and renowned ecological economist Tim Jackson offers a timely and deeply personal manifesto for a more humane future—one where care is central, not sidelined. From the rising burden of chronic disease and the gender politics of care to war, this book confronts the structural violence baked into our pursuit of growth at all costs. 💡 What if we designed our economy to heal—not harm? Irreverent, insightful, and boldly hopeful, #TheCareEconomy is now available in the US and globally. What does #regenerative #investing actually look like? You’ve probably heard us say that regenerative investment goes beyond avoiding harm and the shortcomings of "sustainable finance" approaches. It’s about using capital as a catalyst for genuine #systemschange —where finance serves life, not the other way around. And one of the questions we hear the most is: 👉 “I get the theory—but can you show me real-world examples?” Here are a few Capital Institute alumni doing just that: 🌱 Cordell Jacks, CEO of Regenerative Capital Group, is committed to driving positive change in the world by equipping Canadian SMEs to lead a Regenerative economy. 🌎 Ebru Kaya & André Stürmer, co-founders of Atreyu Investments, are investing in businesses that acknowledge their role in a wider system and intend to restore, replenish, and capacitate all parts of their value chain. These alumni, business leaders and investors are part of a growing global network proving that when capital is guided by regenerative principles, regenerative finance isn't just possible—it’s already happening. 🚨 Curious to learn more about Regenerative Investment? 🌍 Join us for the upcoming "Investment for a Regenerative Economy" 4-week online course led by John Fullerton 📅 Starts June 2, 2025 💸 Scholarships available through May 26 🔗 Enroll here: https://lnkd.in/gCSW4Tw6 Whether you're in finance, impact, sustainability—or simply a change-maker eager to better understand regenerative finance and economics—this course is designed for you! “Gaza’s starvation is not incidental - it is deliberate, entirely engineered - and has now created the largest population facing starvation anywhere in the world. “Oxfam staff and partners are witnessing scenes that defy belief: families wasting away from hunger, malnourished children too weak to cry, and entire communities surviving without food or clean water.” - Mahmoud, Oxfam’s Food Security and Livelihoods Coordinator. Only a handful of aid trucks have been authorised to enter Gaza. Those limited supplies cannot be mistaken for meaningful progress. We need a permanent ceasefire and unrestricted aid access NOW. bit.ly/45zXIMS Illustration: Rachel Deutsch
